About RB Stackworks

We are a UK technology company that identifies operational problems inside industries, then builds, owns and operates the software that solves them.

Why we exist

A great deal of essential work is coordinated with tools that were never designed for it. A rota in a spreadsheet. A handover in a group chat. A risk assessment in a folder in a cupboard, and a manager reconstructing what happened last Tuesday from four sources and someone’s recollection.

That is not a failure of the people doing the work. They are usually doing something difficult, well, with what they were given. It is a gap in the tools. Industries like this tend to be unglamorous, heavily regulated and structurally under-served by software, which is precisely why the gap persists.

RB Stackworks exists to close those gaps commercially: to build the software, own it, operate it and stay accountable for it. We are not a consultancy renting out engineers by the day, and we are not a holding company assembling unrelated businesses. We make products, and we run them.

What we build

Two ventures today, in deliberately unrelated industries: one regulated and operational, one consumer and commercial. Sharing a foundation across both is what keeps each of them affordable to run.

Product engineeringTaking a problem from a first conversation with the people who have it through to software they use on a Tuesday morning.
SaaS platform developmentMulti-tenant applications with the accounts, permissions, billing and audit trails that commercial software needs from day one.
Technology infrastructureManaged cloud infrastructure, deployment pipelines and environment separation shared across every venture we run.
Data and security engineeringAccess control, encryption in transit and at rest, and data handling designed around the sensitivity of what is being stored.
Workflow automationRemoving the manual re-keying, chasing and reconciliation that operational teams absorb as normal.
Operating digital businessesRunning the ventures ourselves, including support, incidents, roadmap and commercial decisions.

How we work

Six things we actually do, rather than values on a wall.

Go and lookWe start with the work as it is actually done, not as the process document describes it. The gap between those two is usually where the product is.
Own the whole thingWe build, run and support what we make. Software you have to operate yourself teaches you things a handover document never will.
Ship narrow, then widenA small part of the job done properly and in production beats a complete system that is still being specified.
Respect the constraintPatchy signal, gloves on, mid-shift, one hand free. The constraints of the environment are design inputs, not edge cases to apologise for.
Write it downDecisions, data handling and architecture are documented because someone will need to justify them later: to a customer, an auditor or a future colleague.
Say what is trueNo invented numbers, no borrowed credibility, no claims we cannot evidence. It is the cheapest form of trust available and most companies spend it immediately.

How a product gets built

It starts with a problem someone is currently solving badly, on purpose, because the alternative is worse. We spend time with the people doing that work and map what actually happens, every workaround included, because workarounds are the requirements document nobody wrote.

From there we take the narrowest useful slice and put it into real use, with real data, as quickly as it can be done responsibly. A product that is live and doing one thing well produces better information in a fortnight than a specification produces in a quarter.

Then we widen it, and we keep operating it. Support tickets, incidents and the things people complain about set the roadmap more than any planning session does. Infrastructure work gets folded back into the shared foundation so the next venture starts further along than the last one did.
